Indications

Colistimethate Sodium or polymyxin E is a widely used antibiotic used for the treatment of gram-negative bacterial infections like urinary tract, diarrhea and many others. The medication is mostly used as the last treatment option for multidrug-resistant Gram-negative infections. Colistimethate is a surface-active agent which penetrates and disrupts the bacterial cell membrane. Colistimethate is polycationic and has both hydrophobic and lipophilic moieties. It interacts with the bacterial cytoplasmic membrane, changing its permeability. This effect is bactericidal. The injection is particularly used against the sensitive strains of Enterobacter aerogenes, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii.
